What Is Urinary Incontinence?

When you think of urinary incontinence does a complete loss of bladder control come to mind? You may be surprised to learn that leaking urine, even just a little when you cough, sneeze, laugh or jump is considered to be a urinary incontinence issue. There are many reasons why someone may begin to experience urinary incontinence but for many people, this symptom begins as they age or after a pregnancy.

Urinary incontinence is a very common issue and is often thought of as something you just have to live with. At V Lounge, we want you to know that although common, urinary incontinence is not normal. You don’t have to accept the status quo and live with bladder leaks. What Is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence happens when a person leaks urine involuntarily. Sometimes this can happen when the urge to urinate comes intensely and with urgency while for others it happens when “stress” such as exercise, sneezing or coughing is put on the pelvic floor muscles. For most people, urinary incontinence can be broken into the categories of urge incontinence, stress incontinence and mixed incontinence which is a bit of both! Urinary incontinence is common and affects many ageing people or those who have given birth.

What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence can be caused by a variety of factors but for many, it is caused by a weak or tight pelvic floor. This can be triggered by hormonal changes during perimenopause or as a natural result of aging. Many people who have given birth find that they struggle with urinary incontinence due to the rather intense toll pregnancy has on the pelvic floor muscles. In many cases stress on the pelvic floor is a contributing factor to urinary incontinence but other factors such as vaginal prolapse, constipation, and other pelvic floor dysfunctions may be the culprit.

Knowing the cause of your urinary incontinence can ensure you're getting the right kinds of treatment. Before beginning Emsella® urinary incontinence treatments we always suggest our patients consult with a pelvic floor physiotherapist to ensure they are good candidates. Speaking with your medical doctor is another great option when it comes to investigating the cause of your urinary incontinence.
