Why Does Bladder Leakage Happen in Pregnancy?

At V Lounge, we often treat patients who have recently had a baby. Though we love helping you regain your continence, Emsella® isn’t suitable during pregnancy. We still think it’s important for you to understand why you may experience bladder leakage during pregnancy though as sometimes these symptoms may last well into the postpartum period.

As you can imagine, your growing baby will eventually take up a lot of room in your uterus. Pregnancy puts a lot of pressure on your pelvic floor as it works to keep you stabilized through your day-to-day activities. Think of your pelvic floor as holding everything up and together as your uterus expands and puts pressure on this area. Increased pressure on your bladder and pelvic floor can turn your one worry-free sneezes into a disaster waiting to happen. So, if you’re wondering, is bladder leakage normal during pregnancy? The answer is yes. However, if you continue to experience urinary incontinence in the months or even years since your baby was born, you don’t have to suffer through it.

Is Bladder Leakage a Sign of Pregnancy?

Are you finding yourself rushing for a bathroom break more frequently or having a more intense urge when it’s time to “go?” If so, you may be wondering, is bladder leakage a sign of pregnancy? The answer is maybe. Every body is different and urge incontinence alone might not be a good indicator of early pregnancy. Many pregnant people will experience bladder leakage at some point in their pregnancy. Although hormonal changes in pregnancy can have you going to the bathroom more often and possibly having a stronger urger or less ability to control your pelvic floor muscles, this occurrence shouldn’t be considered a direct indication of pregnancy.
